Greg is a staple to the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital community.
As a Holland Bloorview volunteer of more than 20 years, Greg is one of the first friendly faces that clients and families meet when they visit the hospital. As a volunteer, Greg gives tours of the hospital to visitors, and takes clients and families to their appointments.
His dedication to Holland Bloorview doesn’t end there. For the past four years, Greg has raised donations for Capes for Kids, which he describes as “a wonderful cause.” Now, he’s proudly putting on a red cape once again – this time as an ambassador for the campaign.
What does Holland Bloorview mean to you?
Greg: Back in the late 80s, there was a place called Bloorview Children’s Hospital [before it amalgamated with Hugh MacMillan Medical Centre to become Holland Bloorview]. It used to be a home long term care facility. I lived there until I was 18 years old. The doctors I had when I was younger were excellent.
Why did you become a volunteer at Holland Bloorview?
Greg: I wanted to be able to help people in any way I can because we are all in this community together. What I try to achieve when I’m here is make sure everybody has a good time.
What are some of your favourite memories as a Holland Bloorview volunteer?
Greg: Meeting the Toronto Argonauts and Toronto FC. One year they brought the cup when they won it. I took my picture with it. It was a dream of mine. In 1992 at Bloorview Children’s Hospital, the Toronto Blue Jays’ president visited with the World Series trophy.
What do you love most about Holland Bloorview?
Greg: I want to see the kids successful and flourish. I love my volunteer resources team, and Joanna at the front desk. She makes it worthwhile. I’ve always said, if it wasn’t for Joanna, I wouldn’t be here. I wouldn’t do what I do just as well as I do.
How do you feel about being a Capes for Kids ambassador?
Greg: I like to teach people that people with disabilities have a voice, too. I decided to do Capes for Kids [because] I have a disability. I want to show people that anybody can do whatever they want to do within reason.
I’m extremely proud to be involved. Holland Bloorview changed my life for good. I’m very proud to be a part of such a wonderful organization. If I can write my name to a cause for kids, I will. Because they’re our future.
